The School District of Chetek Board of Education met Monday night in a regularly schedule meeting.
Following a closed session, winter sports coaches were approved on the consent agenda as follows: Ami Taft as the middle school cheerleading coach; Marty Helgeson as the varsity boys basketball coach; Karl Hanson and Brandon Thalacker as the assistant boys basketball coaches; Rod Rhodes as the varsity girls basketball coach; Bob Olson as the wrestling coach; Peter Cole as the assistant wrestling coach; and Brian Chuchwar as the middle school wrestling coach.

Also approved through the consent agenda were the youth options program for students to take classes through the the University of Wisconsin-Barron County or Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College and an increase in food service and custodial substitute pay from $8.75 per hour to $9.25 per hour effective Sunday.

The board approved the 2009-2010 budget and approved a 6-percent levy increase.

Janis O'Hara, the Chetek High School counselor, presented a college and career assessment report.

As shown in the presentation, 2009-2010 accomplishments are:

Twenty-six sophomore students who scored a minimal or basic range on their eighth-grade WKCE test were placed in a prep resource to work with a teacher until at passing levels; CHS began offering online credit recovery courses for up to 10 students at a time so students who have failed a course may retake it; the number of students who took the PSAT exam tripled to 19 juniors; 17 students participated in the ACT test prep workshops; 15 senior planning conferences have occurred; seniors are being given a folder that has a suggested senior timeline, financial aid information, Wisconsin public and private university guidebook, Wisconsin technical college guidebook, information on the fastest-growing jobs in the state and ACT and SAT test information; and a certified nursing assistant class is now offered through WITC.

O'Hara's plans for the remainder of the year are to: schedule a version of the ACT for sophomores; complete senior conferences; meet with sophomores and parents for individual planning; plan and hold a career day in February; and give classroom presentations for eighth, ninth and 11th grades for planning, testing preparation and post-secondary planning.

Also in her report was the class of 2010's post-secondary plans-49 percent plan on attending a four-year university; 20 percent plan on attending technical college; 11 percent are planning on entering the work force; 9 percent plan on a two-year university; 9 percent are unsure; and 2 percent plan on joining the military.

O'Hara stated that 15 (18.52 percent) of the 2006 graduates enrolled at WITC within three years to pursue their post-secondary educations.
