After a summer full of meetings to discuss the consolidation of the Chetek and Weyerhaeuser school districts, the school board returned to regular business at Monday night's school board meeting.

Spurred by the difficulty of fitting enough core class instructional time into Roselawn's compressed schedule (due to breakfast and the afternoon bus schedule), the school switched the school start and finish times to lengthen the instructional hours of the elementary school day-8:05 a.m. to 3:25 p.m. These students will be picked up by the afternoon bus, and then the buses will pick up the high school and middle school students. The new schedule, which won't affect the start time as much as the end time, is expected to also cut back on elementary behavior problems. Of the discipline referrals the elementary school sees, one-third are bus related. By cutting down time spent sitting on the bus, the students will hopefully behave better. Another change for the upcoming school year is the price of food service for students; adults meals will stay at $3 for lunch and $1.75 for breakfast. The student meal prices will increase as follows: for lunch-high school $2.10 to $2.15; middle school $2 to $2.05; elementary $1.75 to $1.80; for breakfast-high school $1.15 to $1.20; middle school, $1.15 to $1.20; elementary, $0.95 to $1. Changes to the 2008-2009 school budget were announced and explained by Tammy Lenbom before being approved by the board. There is no financial impact; it was only changing the amounts of appropriation and the purposes for which it was used. For more information, see ad on page 6B. As of now, pre-audit, the school is under budget for the year by $37,000, said Lenbom. Roselawn Principal Jill Koenitzer gave the Student Achievement Guarantee in Education and Title One report. Due to an increased number of discipline referrals, there was a meeting in December 2008 to modify the 2008-2009 goals to better meet the social and behavioral needs of the students and has now announced the 2009-2010 goals. They will strive to improve the Life Skills assessment and increase the visibility and leadership of the peacekeepers. The staff hopes to increase the reading and literacy rates by implementing Write Source and Words their Way textbooks, and have Koenitzer in the classroom more often. The elementary faculty is also in the process of selecting a new science textbook to use. Lenbom put forth a resolution to use a line of credit instead of short-term borrowing. It would give the school access of up to $1 million. Sterling Bank in Chetek was approached, and they would be willing. The topic will be tabled and put onto the September board meeting. Earl William Grover, of Chetek, was then interviewed for a temporary, one-year position on the school board. He has a child in the school district, graduated from Chetek and used to live in the Weyerhaeuser area so he knows people there. There is hope he can act as a liaison now that he is part of the board. On the consent agenda, which was approved, were the minutes of the June 22 regular meeting, of the June 29 and July 13 community forums and of the joint school board meeting July 15. Human resource approvals were for the middle school science teacher Brian Bayer, two fourth-grade teachers, the fall sports coaches, the special education transition teacher Tylan Dalrymple, the 2009-2010 non-union support staff contracts, the 2009-2011 administrative contracts, approval of the CLC director and the 2009-10 transportation contract extension with Erb Rural Bus Service, as well as approval of the current two-way communication and electronic devices use policy for students.
