New Auburn FFA attends nationals

The New Auburn High School FFA Chapter attended the 2009 State FFA Convention earlier this month where several students were honored for their achievements. The chapter was recognized for outstanding work and initiatives in the National Chapter Program.
New Auburn High School's FFA chapter attended the 80th annual Wisconsin FFA Convention at the Alliant Energy Center of Dane County in Madison.
The chapter brought 32 members to the convention to compete and participate in events June 8-11.

Participants of the first annual Wisconsin FFA Day of Service were Katie Boehm, Kelsey Bowe and Kylee Lofthus. They assisted in working with a community service project with the City of Madison Parks Division.

New Auburn's FFA chapter was honored for their team accomplishments and chapter members were honored for their individual project and competition efforts.

The chapter was recognized for outstanding work and initiatives in the National Chapter Program with a rating featuring the areas of student, chapter and community development.

Samantha Butterfield achieved third in state and Section I winner for her efforts in the junior high FFA essay contest. Butterfield was awarded a section I plaque and a state FFA plaque with a cash award.

Boehm and Lofthus competed in the State FFA talent competition. Boehm's vocal solo earned a state silver rating. Lofthus performed a vocal solo, which earned her a state gold rating. Lofthus was selected to perform on the state FFA talent stage and the main stage during the convention. Lofthus received a nomination to compete in the national FFA talent competition in Indianapolis, Ind., in October.

The State FFA Agriscience Fair competition recognizes middle and high school students who utilize scientific principles in their agriscience projects. Each member, working as an individual or a team, analyzes their findings in a research paper and display and presents their project to a panel of judges.

Members competing in the 2009 State FFA Agriscience Fair Junior High Division were Cody Bailey, Brett Baker, Cody Baldry, Erica Francis, Dru Galetka, Tasha Grosskopf, Larissa Hubbard, Hunter North, Shaylynn Smutney and Kegyn Steinmetz.

Bailey and Steinmetz competed in engineering, winning second in state and earned gold medallions.

Galetka competed in botany and received a bronze medallion and ranked third in state.

Grosskopf competed in botany and received a bronze medallion and ranked fifth in state.

Hubbard and Smutney researched zoology. Their study earned them a silver medallion and ranked third in state.

North and Francis researched zoology. They won gold medallions and were selected for national competition.

Baker and Baldry competed in engineering. They received a gold award and their project was selected for national competition.

Chapter members competing in the 2009 State FFA Agriscience Fair High School Division included Ariel Miller, Lindsay Smutney, Alexis Pingel, Tayler Brady, Jamie Mabie and Kelsey Bowe.

Miller and Smutney competed in the biochemical/microbiology/food science division. They were awarded a bronze award and ranked fourth in state.
Mabie and Bowe competed in environmental science. They received a bronze medallion and ranked third in state.

Pingel and Brady competed in zoology, receiving gold medallions and ranked second in state.

Members competing in the State FFA Junior High Opening/Closing Ceremony Contest were Bailey, Butterfield, Emily Davis, Lance Grorud, Lofthus, and Clarissa Moschkau.

Shania Felton, Davis and Brooke North completed the 2009 New Auburn chapter scrapbook for the state competition and earned second place in the state FFA scrapbook competition.

Ashley Skuban was awarded the three-star leadership award.

Butterfield, Ryan North and Steinmetz received the Wisconin FFA degree.
Grandon Scheil, representing the Barron FFA Chapter, attended the State FFA Convention with the New Auburn delegation.

Agriscience set-up assistants were members Diona Pitts, Randi Trott, Ian Ziperski, Amber Johnson and Brady.
