The Barron Area Montessori Charter School is accepting enrollment applications for the 2009-2010 school year.

The Barron Area School District is offering a lower elementary Montessori program for 6-9 year-olds in addition to the existing Children's House program for 3-6-year-olds. The charter school is located at the Woodland Elementary School. Montessori experiences establish a strong foundation for learning by fostering the child's curiosity, creativity and natural intelligence in an environment of respect, peace and joy. Each mixed-age classroom provides a three-year curriculum that allows children to learn at their own pace. The children work independently and in small groups with interactive, scientifically designed learning materials under the guidance of highly trained, nurturing Montessori guides. Barron Area Montessori School enrollment application packets will be available Tuesday for the 2009-2010 school year. Applications must be postmarked or received at the Woodland Elementary School by 4 p.m. Feb. 20. Residents who do not reside in Barron County must also submit Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction open enrollment forms. Anyone wondering about the Montessori method of education is encouraged to attend a series of educational events. The first will be held at the library at Woodland Elementary School from 6-7:30 p.m. Jan. 27, and will explore the unique principles of the Montessori method, its history, mission and values, what it means to be a charter school and the importance of the 3-year curriculum. A second event will be Feb. 11 and will focus on how Montessori prepares children for life, the process of normalization and transitioning from Children's House to lower elementary or a traditional classroom. On March 11, Steven Hughes, University of Minnesota Medical School pediatric neuropsychologist, will share his knowledge of early childhood brain development and brain-based, developmental education. An open house will be offered Feb. 3 from 4:30-7 p.m. so prospective parents can meet the guides and see the classrooms. The open house will be held in the Children's Houses. Existing and prospective parents are encouraged to attend all four events. Application packets may be picked up at either workshop, the open house or at the Woodland Elementary School office.
