Cameron’s new $1.2 million, 7,000-square-foot library and senior center was expected to open mid-November, but the new goal is to be operational by the end of the year. Despite being close to opening its doors, the project still needs more funding.

The Cameron Friends of the Library met with the library director to hear an update on the $1 million Cameron Area Library and Senior Center project and to learn how to help with upcoming events to raise the remaining $193,000.

Monetary projects at the building site include fundraising for the overall project, computers, a new color printer/fax/scanner, the honorarium wall, collection development, subscriptions to newspapers, the summer reading program and a computer workshop for seniors. Library Director Mary Shearer noted there are likely to be unforeseen expenses during and after the move to the new facility. Volunteer projects include cleaning and installing shelving and furniture and transporting the collection. On-going projects include working in the library, assistance with children's programming, National Library Week promoting and helping with library projects and fundraising. The senior citizens and friends of the library have been working together to make a new library and senior center a reality. An estimated $193,000 is still needed, so they are looking to the community for financial help. The village board gave $375,000 for the project, and $260,000 was donated from a community development block grant to build rural communities. The Community Bank of Cameron gave $50,000, and Bill Popko matched $25,000 raised during a grant challenge to raise $75,000 for the overall competition. The cost was estimated at $1 million and reportedly the project is within budget. The friends elected to meet on a monthly basis to stay current with the needs of the library. The next meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. Dec. 1 in the current senior center, 914 Main St., Cameron. New members are welcome. Annual dues are $1 for those 18 and under; $2 for an adult; $5 for a family; and a sustaining membership is $25. Dues can be paid at the meeting or mailed to Annette Eischen, 1348, 19 1/2 St., Cameron. At the Nov. 3 meeting, the friends updated their board. Members are President Judy Graf; secretary Carla Tepaske; treasurer Annette Eischen; and directors Genny Brion, Aggie Ciolkosz, Nora Gerber and Char Tubbs.
