The City of Chetek's building inspector position will be put up for bid following a decision by the Chetek city council Wednesday, Sept. 13.

The position is currently held by Bill Koepp. According to city clerk Carmen Newman, Koepp actually hadn't been under contract with the city since 2004. Koepp is paid $28,000 based on a 20-hour work week, Newman said. Mayor Jerry Whitworth, upset with Koepp's job performance, made the suggestion to put the position up for bid at the council meeting. "I can see some of the things I've asked him to do haven't been done," Whitworth said. "I think we can do a lot better cheaper. According to Newman, on Monday, Sept. 18, Koepp requested a meeting with the city council. Vandals apologize Two juvenile vandals who were responsible for a number of acts of spray-painted graffiti this summer apologized to the city council at the meeting Monday. The juveniles were prosecuted through the Barron County Restorative Justice Program, and in cooperation with the victims of the vandalism, repainted the damage that was done and paid restitution for their acts. "It was really stupid for us to do," one of the juveniles admitted. "We didn't think about it at the time. We spent a lot of time cleaning up everything around the city. It won't happen again." "To me it's a man to face up to your problem and admit you did wrong," said alderman Dennis Morley. "Someday you'll own property and you won't want somebody painting it," Whitworth added. No more music tents The council elected not to purchase tents for the Summer Music Program in downtown Chetek. The two tents purchased by the city this year were damaged beyond repair in storms during the summer. Newman said the tents cost the city $3,000 apiece. The tents were used to shelter visitors to the music program, Newman said. She added that the canopies hold rainwater, which adds stress to the tents. "They're not meant to stay up all summer," Newman said. Alderman Bill Waite suggested that the Chetek Chamber of Commerce purchase the tents, since that organization hosts the program. Alderman Cliff Bronstad agreed. "We've got a nice bandshell at the beach," Bronstad commented. "Why don't they go down there?" The council then voted not to replace the tents.
