Volleyball team ends season with dedication

The Chetek High School volleyball team had their regional game at Regis High School in Eau Claire Oct. 20. Despite Chetek sticking with their opponents, their season ended with a 3-0 loss.

"In the first game, they were intimidated by the strong middle hitter and a few good jump servers," noted coach Kari Nelson. "Even though we had practiced with our C team coach hitting against us, it was still intimidating for the girls."

Chetek lost the first battle 13-25, but they picked up speed going into the second game.

"We were sticking with them in the beginning," recalled Nelson. "We were blocking and were reading the hitters, which helped a lot, but we were still struggling with serve-receive and couldn't set up a play."

The girls did better than the first game but were handed a 14-25 loss.
"The team did well in the third game," the coach said. "We even had the lead for a while, and I think Regis was getting nervous. They were getting hits and passing the ball well, but, unfortunately, it wasn't enough."

Chetek lost the final game, 19-25, to end their season.

Becky Fijalkiewicz put down four kills; Alexis Schaaf had seven blocks; Lindsey Hassemer had six kills and 12 blocks; and Chelsie Hetke had eight digs.

Nelson said she'll miss her seniors, and each one brought something to the team. In her words:

Kirsten Bowers brought her knowledge of the game as a setter, and her hard work made her a leader.

Hassemer was the team's strongest blocker, and she was a strong hitter. She was the captain of the team and showed leadership both on and off the court.
Jena Grabowski was a kind player who would do anything to be on the court, and she worked hard to help and better the team. She adjusted well to a new position and helped offensively with her strong serves.

Schaaf always had a smile on her face and was an all-around good player. She stepped it up when things weren't looking good and remained competitive through it all.

Hetke was an excellent digger and was the goofball of the team. She kept everyone's spirits high and made sure everyone was having fun playing a game we all love.

"Each year we're getting better," Nelson continued. "I look forward to continuing that, especially because we have a good group of juniors coming up."
