Chetek Chain O' Lakes fishing report

Get out while you can. The end of the game fishing season is coming to a close at the end of the day March 1. This does not include the shore lines of the Great Lakes.
Another cold arctic blast will be hitting this area again later this week for two to three days, so don't go putting away those ice shacks just yet.

Ice fishing on the Chetek chain has been good for the anglers willing to move around to find the active fish. Walleye fishermen are getting some action off of shallow points with gravel coming off of the shore lines and some weed growth in the area. By shallow, I mean sometimes in three to five feet of water. Many are having success using tip-ups tipped with a small shiner or a small sucker minnow. Again, a little of your favorite fish attractant dripped on your minnow won't hurt your chances of landing the elusive walleye.

Northern pike anglers have had good success throughout the chain of lakes. A lot of the action is coming in water depths of five to 10 feet with either some weeds or wood structure in the area. Tip-ups with a medium to large shiner set roughly two to three feet under the ice should get plenty of action throughout the day. Don't be afraid to set tip-up a foot off the bottom.

Bass fishermen, start getting those sticks dusted off and get out and start practicing hitting the holes with a favorite jig. Tip-up fishermen and pan fishermen are getting a lot of bass on their jigging sticks and tip-ups.

The panfishing has been very good for fishermen willing to move around to find the active schools of bluegills and the occasionally larger crappies. Fishermen willing to roam from hole to hole are having good success with some nice-sized bluegills. Using the smallest jigs can help, too. Black pierce jigs and purple pierces are working on darker days; on brighter days, chartreuse orange moon glitter are working well. Russian Mormushkas are also working for fishermen willing to try something new on the market in one of the local bait shops.

Fishermen fishing below the dam on those warm days near the dead-end road side need to be aware of the no-trespassing signs posted along the property line of one of the area's residents. Fishermen walking behind the dam and along the waterway there have been given trespassing tickets in the past week. Be careful, and look for the signs.
