Well-known New Auburn home twice target of thieves

What may have been the work of a joker could put a damper on outdoor decorating at a well-known New Auburn home.
Jack and Suzanne Perry dress an eight-foot wooden bear, nicknamed Beary Perry, for neighbors and travelers to enjoy. Beary sports seasonal wear and holiday gear; he's also a reminder of the couple's honeymoon, when they first spotted a carved bear.

But now, for the second time, the Perrys' decor has been stolen from their yard. Who was responsible-and why they would do it-is a mystery, says Suzanne.

"I can't imagine anyone doing this. The community has been so wonderful and supportive with Beary Perry's outfits. We have received letters, photos and even an entire picture album of his changes," she adds.

The last time the Perrys were targeted, flamingos that complemented Beary's Hawaiian look were taken. All the mailboxes in the neighborhood were destroyed the same night.

The couple reported the incident to police. The flamingos were only worth about $20, but knowing their security had been breached was disheartening.

This time, a six-foot Gemmy inflatable pumpkin, with an estimated value of more than $50, was the victim.

The pumpkin, taken from their display between 6 and 7 p.m. either Oct. 27 or last Wednesday, was a gift from their niece and was of great sentimental value.

Suzanne hopes it'll turn up in someone's yard, and they will return it.

"If you suddenly received an inflatable jack-o-lantern, approximately 4-feet tall and 6-feet wide, without the standard ground screws and the box, there is a good chance it is our missing pumpkin."

Otherwise, Suzanne hopes the thief or thieves will return the pumpkin.

"This was a gift from our niece and it has hurt so many people by the senseless act. Please just return it. It can be left by the bear and no questions will be asked."

"The upcoming holiday season is a wonderful time for Beary and ourselves," she comments. "There is nothing more rewarding than to come home and see children getting their pictures taken by the decorated bear. We have met many wonderful people because of Beary. I would hate to have to stop or really scale back because of theft or vandalism."
