Small town, numerous unique shops

Gail Hagen, of Chetek, browsed the plethora of items in Annz Boutique & Books last Wednesday. Annz is one of many distinctive stores in Chetek that offers various gift items perfect for the upcoming holiday season.
Besides gift cards from most businesses, more than a handful of stores in Chetek offer colorful, fun and useful gifts for anyone this Christmas holiday season.
Walking down the main drag, there is the Dog Dance Art Center, Ohde Health Mart Pharmacy, Time & Again Antique Mall, Elly's Sheared Sheep, the Rod & Gun Sport Shop, The Court Yard Gallery & Gifts, Annz Boutique & Books and The Picket Fence.

The eight unique stores on Second Street offer virtually everything a shopper on the prowl for holiday gifts could ask for, but they aren't the only stores Chetek has to offer.

There is also Crafts and Gifts by Char, the Corner Cupboard, Horton's True Value, Lampert's, Keg 'N Kork, Lake Country Marina, Creative Concepts Sportsear, The Family Dollar, The Chetek Alert and Del's Embroidery, and more that offer gift certificates and other options.

The Chetek area is home to a myriad of artistic persons, and the shops are the proof.

Elly's Sheared Sheep sells quilting materials and supplies, as well as yarn and other crocheting and knitting necessities. Not only are supplies available, each employee makes products, such as quilts, to sell. Lessons for these crafts are also offered. Hours are Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Dog Dance Art Center offers art by community artists, antiques, Scentsy products, vintage and baby wear, a dance studio and small pet grooming. Winter hours are Wednesday through Saturday 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. or other days by chance.

The Picket Fence, new to Chetek this year, offers Teleflora services (flowers for any occasion), balloon bouquets, homemade crafts, seasonal decor, Door County coffee and natural soaps. Their selection is always changing. Check it out Tuesday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. or Sunday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Country decor is also the theme at Crafts & Gifts by Char. She has Christmas and every day gift ideas, as well as towels, dish clothes, candles, snowmen, garland and more. She is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The Court Yard Gallery & Gifts is home to oils, pastels, watercolors, photography, pottery, wood carvings, blown glass, jewelry, silk scarves and other gift options. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays.

The Corner Cupboard recently moved back to Chetek. They still carry seasonal and year-round knick knacks, beanie babies and dolls, and have a variety of homemade crafts: footed pajamas (all sizes and various patterns), vests, caps, pillows, robes, blankets, towels, etc.

"Something for everyone," agreed part-owner Ella Waterhouse.

The store is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

DEL Sportswear does screen printing and embroidery through regular inventory or customized, personalized, special orders. With their expanded showroom, they have Chetek Bulldog apparel, clothing with humorous sayings, souvenir gear and hats, jackets, sweatshirts and more. Take a look Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Arts, decor and handmade products are readily available at those stores, but there are other gifts ideas as well.

Annz Boutique & Books, with an ever-changing inventory, boasts artsy decor and apparel as well as a variety of other merchandise. The store carries books (and can place special orders), jewelry, clothing, scarves, decorative signs, several gift items under $10 and a complete children's section. Look through the medley Wednesday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. or Saturday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Then there are the stores that one may overlook as places to shop for Christmas presents. Despite seeming to carry only what their name implies, these Chetek retailers offer a wide range of goodies.

Horton's True Value Hardware, open 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. every day, offers the regular assortment one would find in a hardware store, and tools, bird feeders, knives, garden decoration, holiday lights and light fixtures.

Lampert's in Chetek also has any building, remodeling or fix-it project supplies and materials one may need, but they offer a catalogue and Web site to do online shopping for anything from automotive, holiday, wall coverings, office or pet supplies and more. Pay for the order online and ship to store to get free freight costs.

One can find liquor gift sets, wine and spirits, bait and tackle at the Keg 'N Kork. Cruise on in Monday through Saturday 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. or Sunday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Ohde Health Mart Pharmacy carries Russel Stover candy, the Burt's Bees line, Leanin' Tree and other Christmas cards, jewelry and Terry Redlin, Wild Wings and county-style giftware as well as the average items found at a pharmacy. They are open 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday.

Chetek's Rod & Gun Sport Shop has the fishing poles, tackle, guns and ammunition one expects from such a store, but they also carry souvenir clothing and received a shipment of Chetek shirts Thursday. They have sportswear, the new Kromer hats for men and women and deerskin leather gloves. Shop the store Monday through Saturday 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. or Sunday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Time & Again Antique Mall houses around 42 dealers, guaranteeing a large variety of items. There is a coin dealer, vintage jewelry, toys, collectable sports cards, books and more. The store, open year round, can be browsed from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The first three months of the year, they are closed Sundays and Mondays.

The Family Dollar sells decor, name brand toys, clothing, batteries, decorations, candles, gift wrap, cards, chocolates and Christmas candy. Open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. (10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday) from next Wednesday through the holidays, the store is easily available.

Lake Country Marina offers more than just boats. They have fishing and boating accessories, trolling motors, depth finders, fish locators, tow ropes, fun tubes (for snow and water), all-terrain vehicle accessories and you can order just about anything else. Check out their gear Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Creative Concepts Sportswear, open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., has a small retail selection of Chetek Bulldog apparel, but screen prints or embroiders custom orders.

The books "Chetek: City of Lakes, a Pictorial History" and A Palace in the Popples by local author Mert Cowley are available at The Chetek Alert. Other gifts include Bulldog stadium cushions, subscriptions and photos from the online photo gallery (www.chetekalert.com), which features the pictures in the paper and never-before-seen photos as well. The prints can be placed on T-shirts, magnets, ornaments, puzzles and more.

Gift certificates are another option local cafes, restaurants, gas stations, golf courses, stores and other businesses offer.

Check out A Healthy Touch and Back to Basics (massage therapy businesses); Sandals Nail Spa & Tanning; Chetek Beauty Shoppe and Total Image (beauty salons); Bossany's Barber Shop; GTC Auto Parts; Chetek Bakery; Chetek Lanes Event Center & Pizzeria; Chetek Therapy and Fitness; Chetek Veterinary Clinic and Animal Hospital of Chetek; Chetek Car Wash; Kirkwood's Market; Sioux Creek Golf Course, Sunset View Golf and Fore Seasons Golf; or savings bonds from Sterling Bank, First National Bank or Heritage Credit Union.

So while looking over the list of those to buy presents for, don't forget the motley of unique options available right in Chetek.

I love the fact that Chetek has so many unique shops available. Men and women who are courageous enough to start their own small businesses, in a community that panders to seasonal tourists, are what keep Chetek distinct and attractive to families who come here every summer. Great job!
