Albert M. Drost, 95, of New Auburn, died Friday, Aug. 21, 2009, at Pillars of Oakdale Hospice, Oakdale, Minn., following a three-month struggle with cancer.

Albert was born July 24, 1914, in Cameron, to Joseph F. and Mary (Shlinger) Drost. He attended Cameron Public School, graduating in 1931. His desire was to become a woodworker/carpenter, but financial resources were lacking for further schooling due to the Great Depression. In 1936, Albert went to South Bend, Ind., in pursuit of employment with the Bendix Corporation, where he worked until the end of World War II. He met and married Geraldine Spears in 1938, and this marriage was blessed with five children. Following World War II, Albert moved his family back to Wisconsin on a farm near New Auburn. He continued to reside there for the remainder of his life. He farmed through 1961, at which time he took employment with the ABC Company in Chetek, manufacturing wood products, where he worked until his retirement in 1982. From the time he was old enough, Al loved to hunt and fish and did so with much enthusiasm. The highlight of each year was deer hunting season. He missed only one season (last year) due to illness. Albert was a very active member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Chetek, from his return to Wisconsin until passing. His service to others will be remembered by many who will recall that it was done with earnest seriousness of purpose and tempered with common sense and good humor as well as a story or two to brighten the day. Albert is survived by three sons, Michael A. (Corrine), of River Falls, John P. (Zoila), of Eau Claire, and James J. (Ila), of Stillwater, Minn.; two daughters, Suzanne Drost (Mark Modjean), of Roseville, Minn., and Mary (Neil) Garfinkel, of Fredrick, Md.; five grandchildren, Elisabeth, Jennifer, Brian, Peter and André; eight great-grandchildren, Aidan, Nathaniel, Jaeden, Julia, Rede, Foster, Porter and Kindle; and several nieces and nephews. He will be sadly missed by his family and many others whose lives he touched. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife "Gerry"; four brothers; and four sisters. Funeral service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Chetek with Father Gerard Willger officiating. Visitation will be Thursday from 4-7 p.m. with a 6:30 p.m. rosary service at Burnham-Ours Funeral Home in Chetek. Burial will be at St. Boniface Cemetery in Chetek.
