Norman Richard Skille, 79, of Stone Lake, passed away at his home Wednesday, July 22, 2009, after a courageous battle with esophageal cancer.
Norman was born March 24, 1930, in Crystal Lake Township, the son of John and Helen (Ruppel) Skille. He was raised in Stone Lake until his family moved to Waukesha to operate a dairy farm. He attended high school in Spooner. Norman joined the U.S. Air Force, where he learned to operate heavy equipment. After his time in the service, he moved back to Stone Lake, where he started a construction business. Norman was joined in marriage Nov. 4, 1959, to Mary David Zawistowski. Together they operated Golden Pond Cranberry Marsh in Stone Lake. Norman loved to operate heavy equipment and enjoyed moving the earth. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and teaching his grandchildren to deer hunt and how to use heavy equipment. Norman never truly retired as he always enjoyed staying busy with the construction, sand and gravel and cranberry businesses. His family, friends and customers will remember his friendly personality and good sense of humor.

Norman is survived by his wife of 49 years, Mary; three children, Linda (Scott Pufahl) Skille, of Burnsville, Minn., Cindy (Keith) Hamer, of Denver, Iowa, and Vaughan Skille, of Stone Lake; three stepchildren, Sandra (Peter) Buhl, of Winnebago, Minn., Patricia Rogers, of Eau Claire, and David Zawistowski, of Eagle River; three grandchildren, Leah (Joe) Morton, Blake and Austin Hamer; 10 stepgrandchildren; eight stepgreat-grandchildren; three brothers, Leo (Marian) Skille, of Madison, Gene (Doris) Skille, of Hayward, and John Allen Skille, of Eau Claire; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Arlen Skille.
A funeral service for Norman will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Anderson-Nathan-Koerpel Funeral Home in Hayward. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday and one hour prior to the service Saturday at the funeral home. Interment will follow at the Evergreen Cemetery in Stone Lake.

Casket bearers will be Peter Buhl, Austin Hamer, Blake Hamer, Keith Hamer, William "Joe" Morton, Scott Pufahl, Tim Shuey and Mike Skille.

Honorary bearers will be Marty Elbert, Leo Skille, Ken Sweeney and Randy Warder.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Hayward Regional Hospice, 15910 W Company Lake Road, Hayward, WI 54843 or the Stone Lake Historical Society, PO Box 68, Stone Lake, WI 54876.
