Experience fun during County Fair

Preparations are under way for the 2009 Barron County Fair with plenty of fair food, entertainment and animals to amuse the masses when the fair begins this Wednesday.

The fair runs through Sunday and takes place at the Barron County Fairgrounds on Hwy. 48 in Rice Lake. Fair time begins at 8 a.m. and runs until 12 a.m. each day. Wednesday's activities include entries, weigh-ins and judging in several animal and produce categories. There is also a sneak-a-peek wristband special from 5-10 p.m. Beginning at 7 p.m. will be harness racing at the grandstand. Admission is $5 per person. Thursday is Kids' Day, when fairgoers 15 years old and younger are admitted for free until 4 p.m. All Midway rides are $1 from 1 p.m. until closing. Thursday's activities include additional showings and judgings. The hog show begins at 8:30 a.m., with the beef show to start at 1 p.m. Harness racing will take place in the grandstand at 7 p.m. Admission is $5 per person. Senior Citizens' Day is Friday, when those over 62 are admitted for $4 until 4 p.m. The dairy show begins at 9 a.m. The Fairest of the Fair Pageant begins at 7 p.m. at the gazebo. Following the pageant, a truck pull will take place at the grandstand at 8 p.m. Admission is $8 for adults and $3 for children 6-12. By bringing two nonperishable food pantry donations Saturday, a fairgoer's wristband price is reduced during Good Neighbor Day from 1-11 p.m. The day begins with a showmanship and western horse show in the horse arena at 7 a.m. The livestock sale buyer/seller luncheon begins at 11 a.m. A sanctioned pedal pull under the grandstand begins at 1:30 p.m. At the same time, the junior livestock sale will begin. A farm tractor pull at the grandstand is set for 7 p.m. Admission is $8 for adults and $3 for children 6-12. Capping off Saturday events is Catholic Mass at Fairtime Chapel beginning at 8 p.m. An ecumenical church service at the Fairtime Chapel begins the events Sunday at 10 a.m., with the state fair dairy show parade set to begin at 11 a.m. The Little Britches Dairy Show will start at 12:30 p.m. The Last Blast ride wristband discount runs from 1-6 p.m. The Youth Building Champion Recognition Program is set to start at 5 p.m. The evening will end with a demolition derby at 7 p.m. at the grandstand. The derby will feature full-size, compact cars, combines and school buses. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children 6-12. There will also be a variety of entertainment opportunities throughout the week. Family comic Kenny Ahern will perfrom three shows a day Thursday through Saturday at 1 p.m., 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Hypnotist Sammi Dare will have two shows a day Thursday through Saturday at 2:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. Daily admission to the fair is $5 for those 13 and older, $3 for those ages 6-12. The fair is free for children under 5. A season pass is $15 for those 13 and older, $10 for those 6-12.
