A local team raising money for cancer research is going to great lengths this year, specifically, eight inches or more - of hair, that is.

Friends Fighting Cancer, a group that annually competes to raise the most money for cancer research during the Relay for Life event, has joined with local hair stylists to offer an enticement one cut above the rest. People who have at least eight inches of hair they'd like to cut off can donate that length to Pantene's Beautiful Lengths, a campaign that encourages people to grow, cut and share their hair to make no-cost, real-hair wigs for women with cancer.

Eligible hair can have no more than 5 percent gray, nor can it be bleached, permanently colored or chemically treated.

Those with shorter hair can also donate the price of a cut or hairdo to one of several hair stylists who will be on hand and will give the money to the cause.

Appointments are suggested, drop-ins accepted, during the Relay for Life event Aug. 3 from 6-9 p.m.

Stylists involved are Darla, of Darla's Hair, 633-2887; Nicki, of Permanently Your Ink, 633-8264; and Tara, of River's Edge, 633-3343.
