EARLING -- A small group of people in the United States are working to honor fallen soldiers from the Afghanistan/Iraq war by scroll sawing portraits of them.
Larry Kramer of Earling, is involved in the group, Portrait Freedom Underway, who scroll saws portraits of fallen soldiers.
"We're just doing it for honor, to honor the soldiers," Kramer said. Full Story

Donations, sponsors needed for fireworks show HARLAN -- Fireworks have been lighting up the 4th of July night sky in Harlan for more than 25 years. This year the American Legion is funding their fireworks show without a sponsor, said John Schuning, American Legion Fireworks Committee Member, but the fireworks show cannot be held next year without a sponsor. Bucket of junk contest begins COUNTY -- The second annual Shelby County 4-H Bucket of Junk contest has begun! Ten buckets filled with similar items are ready for pick up at the Shelby County Extension office.
The buckets are full of items sometimes called "junk". Pick up a bucket and take it home so the next few weeks can be used to prepare a sculpture or piece of yard art that will be displayed at the Shelby County Fair. Full Story

Texas pair arrested; hiding out in building COUNTY -- Two Texas men have been charged with first-degree theft following a search that spanned two days, eventually culminating with their arrest in rural Shelby County Thursday morning, June 25. Full Story

New laws go into effect July 1 COUNTY -- The 2,000 foot rule will no longer apply to all sex offenders beginning July 1.
The law, Senate File 340 - Sex Offender Law Changes, will restrict 20 percent of very serious sex offenders from being within 2,000 foot of schools or daycare centers, but 80 percent of less serious sex offenders will not have to comply with this. Full Story

Wellness Center bids approved HARLAN -- Myrtue Medical Center officials are projecting the new Petersen Family Wellness Center and Lewis Family Aquatic Complex may be open on or near July 1, 2010. The original estimated date of April 2010 has been extended several months due to rain hampering construction. Full Story

Welcome the Corn Crib SHELBY -- For the average passerby, the rolling greens along Interstate 80 might peak only few interests in terms of your typical tourist stops. There isn't much in sight to really say Iowa, next to the knee-high corn rows and the exit signs to The World's Largest Truck Stop or the Amana Colonies.

Panamania 125 a huge success PANAMA -- The celebration of Panama's 125th anniversary over the weekend was considered a huge success by all involved. Thousands of people turned out for the events of the weekend.

Unknown substance found; hazmat called REGIONAL -- Local law enforcement and emergency personnel are investigating the discovery of small glass vials filled with an unknown substance in Harrison County, that led to the dispatch of area hazardous materials personnel for clean-up last week.
