The Falcons took the opening drive and marched down the field, with a couple passes as the big plays, to take a 6-0 lead. The Patriots would wait until the 2nd quarter to even the score at 6. Then the 2nd half belonged to the Patriots as quarterback Ryan Tomlinson would score in the 3rd and 4th quarters, around a safety that would make the final score Coventry 19 - Avon 8.
Avon's Terence Olsen would grab the short opening kickoff at the Avon 46-yard line, to give the Falcons great position to start the game. The Patriots were keying off the Avon running game, but David Wyrick would connect with Andy Roell on a 37-yard play to give Avon a 1st down on the Coventry 20. Avon then ran for another 1st down on the Coventry 10-yard line, but on 4th down and 10, the Wyrick to Roell combo would put Avon on the board with 7:20 left in the quarter. The extra point kick failed when the snap sailed over everyone including kicker Danny Heelan, to make the score Avon 6 - Coventry 0. The Patriots mounted a drive late in the 1st quarter after a 54-yard punt by Jarod Marshall put Coventry on their own 16-yard line. They would finally hit pay dirt when Travis Pascarelli would bull in from 5 yards out with 7:20 remaining in the half. The extra point pass came up short, to make the score Avon 6 - Coventry 6, which carried into the half.
In the 2nd half, the Patriots started on their own 20-yard line, and marched down the field like the Falcons did to open the game. Tomlinson scored on an 8-yard scamper with 5:32 left in the quarter. The extra-point pass was incomplete, to make the score Coventry 12 - Avon 6. Avon would start on their own 35-yard line and would march to the Coventry 1-yard line, but the Patriots would hold, and start their drive on the 6-inch line. With a 4th down and 4 at their 7, the Patriots elected to take a safety, which made the score Coventry 12 - Avon 8, with 6:13 remaining. Matt Gouveia took the ensuing kickoff at the Coventry 49-yard line, and a 4-yard return gave Avon the ball on the 45, with their own destiny in their hands. A 10-yard reverse by Terence Olsen gave the Falcons a 1st down on the 34-yard line, but Avon would lose the ball on downs at the Coventry 33. A few Patriot runs would move the ball to the 49, where Tomlinson would break through the defense and run 51 yards for the touchdown with 1:17 remaining. Erik Larsen would add the extra point kick to make the final score Coventry/Windham Tech 19 - Avon 8.
Avon faced a tough opponent that was able to control the Falcon ground game for the first time this season, and Avon had no answers, as they drop to 0-3 on the year.
Next weekend is sports weekend and also homecoming for the Falcons. The boy's soccer team plays at the high school under the lights at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 3. On Thursday night, Oct. 5, the girls field hockey team plays at 6:30, which will be followed by the girls soccer team, which plays on Friday, Oct. 6, at the high school at 7 p.m.. The football team will face Housatonic/Wamogo at 7 p.m. on Saturday night, Oct. 7 for their homecoming game. Come out and support the Falcons all week long in this exciting event.
