Avon's Derek Erman would kick off the opening ball, which rolled dead on the Hyde 27-yard line. On the first play from scrimmage Zane Marks would dance his way 39 yards to the Avon 34. After a holding penalty on Hyde, quarterback Robert Walker would scamper 44 yards into the end zone only a minute and 12 seconds into the contest. Rodney Williams would add the extra point to make the score Hyde 7 - Avon 0. It looked like it could be a long afternoon, but the game tightened up, with no more scoring in the quarter. The Howling Wolves would not add to their lead until 6:46 remained in the half, when Walker would connect with Robert Durham on a 29-yard pass. Again, Williams would add the extra point to make the score Hyde 14 - Avon 0. On their next possession, Avon would have a pass intercepted and Hyde would start on the Avon 31. After several running plays, a couple incomplete passes, and a procedure penalty, Marks would bounce into the end zone with 4:26 remaining in the half. The extra point snap was bobbled, and the ball was never in position as the conversion was blocked, making the score Hyde 20 - Avon 0. After an 18-yard kickoff return by Danny Heelan, Avon would start on their 39-yard line. After a short run, John Rowley would snap one for 48 yards to the Hyde 9, giving the Falcons a first and goal. Rowley would run for five, then Michael D'Onofrio would add three more before Rowley would punch in from one yard out. The extra point conversion would be dropped to make the score Hyde 20 - Avon 6 with 2:14 left in the half. Hyde was not done yet. Starting on their 40, a Walker to Jordan Gilliam pass would move the ball to the Avon 31. Then Zach Hoffman would intercept the ball in the end zone. After three quick plays, Avon was forced to punt again, and this time Durham returned the ball to the Avon 31. On the second play, Walker and Durham would again team up on a 31-yard touchdown pass with five seconds left in the half. Walker added the extra point run, to make the score Hyde 28 - Avon 6 at the half.
The third quarter was scoreless, and the Falcons would add the only score of the second half with 1:18 remaining in the game. On a second down, D'Onofrio would find Tom Hannifan, and he would bull into the end zone. The extra point pass was incomplete, to make the final score Hyde 28 - Avon 12, which is how the game would end.
The game leaves Hyde in a quandary, and gives Avon an energy boost for the next contest against North Branford on Thursday, Sept. 21, 2006 at 6:30 p.m. in North Branford. The next couple games, including a home game against Coventry on Sept. 30, will provide the Falcons with some guidance on how the season could progress. The first step taken against Hyde shows promise and enthusiasm that is exciting to watch.
