Your editorial about visiting politicians in the Nov. 3rd Dispatch was an inspired piece of work. Our being treated as slow-witted children has not helped the country, and never will. I'd rather hear some some wild-eyed solutions that may not work than all the tripe I'm hearing now. So, mister/missus/ms "public servant", when you come to a Kansas town, make sure you have some bullets in your ideas gun. Good thinking - nice writing! R. Gaetz, Mayor of Chapman, KS.

I was appalled when I read last night paper and saw almost every person was given unsupervised probation by the judge. I realize this is not a first, but it's about time the citizens of Clay Center say we've had enough. When we allow meth dealers and drunks to get a slap on the wrist, what are we telling our youth. I would hope at the next election, clay county residents show they are serious about making this a decent law abiding community and remove the judge.

I thought I would bring it to the attention of Law Enforcement there has been vandalism in Leonardville and possibly Riley also. Since there is spray paint in common and the close proximity, some one might want to compare with RCPD. Just an idea.

As an old Assist Chief of Police, it was an eye opener to see how the sleepy little town has changed. Still have friends in town and really miss them. I will keep reading the Dispatch to keep up.

I wish to express my sorrow in the passing of Mr. Wall. He sold me my first lawn mower, a Lawn Boy on credit for six dollars a week payment. That lawn mower mowed a lot of grass. Isnt it interesting how we remember the many things that effected our lives and still do today by the lessons we learned from kindness and trust back then. Again my deapest sympathy.

Well, you did it again! No crossword puzzle in tonight's (Oct. 20) paper. Why is it so hard to remember to put it in the paper each day??? I really miss it when it's not there. Maybe you should designate a particular area of the paper to put it in like the Salina Journal does. Maybe then you would remember it.

Let me correct myself! I realize that my statement "Clay County has a higher incidence of drinking by minors than the other 91 counties" is seriously wrong. I mean to say that Clay County has a higher incidence of drinking by minors than 91 counties - meaning, of course that of 105 counties in Kansas 91 have a lower reported incidence of drinking by minors. Before someone jumps down my throat about the error I prefer to correct it myself. Thank you.

Re: Culture of drinking must be changed. Clay County has a higher incidence of drinking by minors than the other 91 counties in the state. Clay County is certainly not ranked 14th in density of population. One can conclude only that Ms. Davis and Ms. Cott are absolutely correct that young people (students) in Clay County are living in a "culture of drinking". Strangely enough an overwhelming majority of teachers throughout the county see evidence of the problem. Barely more than half of parents and students recognize or admit that the problem of alcohol and drug abuse exists. When we lived in Clay Center a woman of our acquaintance, with two teen-aged children, would quite LOUDLY insist that HER children were not the kind to get in trouble. Why, they went to school every day and to church every Sunday! Since leaving Clay Center we have read in the Dispatch online edition (under Police & Court) that each of those two school-attending, church-going, upstanding young people has been arrested while still in high school - the youngest one on alcohol charges. We took no pleasure in reading about those arrests, by the way. It saddened us deeply to have what we suspected confirmed and to know that there was yet one more parent suffering from "ostrich complex". The children of Clay County, the high school, middle school and elementary students are the richest resource of the county. That resource is in serious danger from itself and its own actions. Yet these students see drinking as a "prestigious accomplishment" much the way my generation viewed being selected to the National Honor Society or earning a college scholarship. I believe that the counselors (and school faculty) are on the right course trying to really educate the young people of Clay County, but the best teachers these students have are called "Mom" and "Dad". Parents must take off the blinders and realize and recognize the scope of the drug and alcohol abuse problem in their county while there is still a chance of turning the life of their child around. To the parents I can only say that your children should be precious to you and doing everything in your power to steer them away from alcohol and drug abuse should be of paramount importance.

I just noticed this morning (September 30, 2009) that the online edition of the Dispatch hasn't really been updated since Friday. I hope this doesn't indicate a problem or a shortage of personnel needed to keep the online edition current! For those of us no longer living in Clay Center it's the best way we have to keep up with the "goings-on" in the town we used to call home.

Dispatch reader, I believe John was refering to the dead beats that have several kids and dont work, or if they do work its only the minimum due to the fact if they go over so many hours their benefits are reduced. John I agree with you! I think there should be guidelines for this reduced phone service and I'm sure there will be. The people that are unable to work due to illness or physical problems SHOULD get help! But the other people that only work minimum hours only because they dont want to should NOT get anymore help! They already get food, medical, childcare and sometimes reduced housing costs! What more do they WANT!!! Lets not forget you can go to the local bars and find these people in there drinking thier money away or should I say our tax money while we are busting our asses trying to make ends met.

I'm replying to John who commented about "free phones" for low income people. This is apparently a story I missed. The point I would like to make, however, is that perhaps many "low income people" are physically unable to work two or three jobs as John so nobly did. I am. I cannot work even one job because of cancer and heart disease - neither being something over which I had any control. Perhaps, John, "low income people" who are "getting free money" to use your words are, in many cases, people who have worked and paid their taxes but because of severe health issues, job loss or other things beyond their control find themselves in need of help. Please do not judge these people until you have walked at least a mile, or even more, in their shoes. (Please rest assured that even though I am disabled, no longer able to work and am VERY low income I do pay for my own telephone and pretty much everything else. I also thank God that there are programs to assist those people who are not as fortunate as I am.)

I agree with "James I'm Not" regarding KCLY's lack of "local news". I stopped "tuning in" some time ago for just that reason.

Cathy, I apologize. You are absolutely right in that I did not read your post carefully enough. I'm very sorry and I do hope that you will accept my apology. To James I'm Not, please understand that I am the last person in the world who would be called a "fan" of Doctor Dobson or his program. I used the term "somewhat conservative" because even though I know just how conservative his views are I also know that those views are very popular with a large portion of the KCLY listening audience. In trying NOT to offend it appears that I have offended you and Cathy as well. I'm still diametrically opposed to corporal punishment either in the home or at school. (Evidence of spanking or worse, in the form of welts or bruises that are seen by a teacher or health care professional HAS to be reported to authorities as possible child abuse, however.) I respect your opinion and Cathy's opinion, and again, I sincerely apologize for offending both of you and any other readers.

I don't know about anybody else but I am sick and tired of giving free money to people. Now they are going to give free tax payer money to phones for low income people. Maybe these low income people should get a second or third job to support their families like I did. The welfare state is going to lead to the collapse of america we can't continue to give all these free benefits any more.
