ART SHOW -

Colin Markelon of Middlebury shows off parts of the zoo he helped build to his sister Julia Markelon during the Creative Arts Studio Art Show on Thursday evening, November 12, in Woodbury.

Colin is a member of the Ready, Set, Grow class at the school, while Julia is in the Snapdragon class for three-year-olds.

Property Owner Sues Town,
Chair and Commission

BETHLEHEM - Oxford resident Michelle Zurko-Smith, owner of property at 64 Double Hill Rd., is suing the town, the Planning Commission and its chairman, Robert Gallo.

The town received notification of the lawsuit on October 23. The town's attorney, Michael Rybak, told Voices that the town's insurance carrier, CIRMA, and its defense counsel are handling the lawsuit.

Washington Housing Commission Panel Signs Letter of Intent on Parcel
WASHINGTON - In September 2008, the Housing Commission sent a letter to residents seeking "a few good acres" that might be potential properties for affordable housing. That effort is now coming to fruition.

The commission has signed a Letter of Intent on a parcel at 294 Sabbaday Lane, owned by Estelle Bronson, for roughly three acres of land that could be suitable for homes.

Education Board Honors McClure;
New Monthly Budget Format Presented

NEWTOWN - The Board of Education reviewed a new budget format at its meeting Tuesday, November 17.

Board members also received the strategic school plan.

Superintendent Dr. Janet Robinson announced the meeting was Elaine McClure's last as board chair.

Dr. Robinson thanked Ms. McClure for 12 years of volunteering and indicated a group gathered in the room. They had attended the meeting to pay tribute to Ms. McClure.

Middlebury Board Hears Concerns
on Upgrade Issues

MIDDLEBURY - Police Commissioner Ron Clark and resident Richard Dews, at the Board of Selectmen meeting, Monday, November 16, expressed concern about the Board of Finance's decision concerning the police communications upgrade.

The Board of Finance, at a meeting Wednesday, November 4, decided to form a subcommittee to look into the $1 million difference between the bids submitted by Motorola, Inc., and Marcus Communications.

Permit Renewals for O&G Quarries
Topic of Hearings

WOODBURY - Two public hearings on O&G Industries' permit renewals for mining and excavation at the Stiles and Park Road quarries took place at the Tuesday, November 10, Zoning Commission meeting.

Ken Faroni of O&G Industries delivered a presentation for each quarry. Commissioner Ted Tietz, Jr., recused himself from the public hearings, as he is the owner of Tietz Trucking.

The public hearing on the Stiles Road quarry was continued until the 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, November 24, Zoning Commission meeting at the Annex Conference Room, 297 Main St. South. The public hearing on the Park Road quarry was closed.

Ordinance to Protect Farming Approved,
By Oxford Town Meeting

OXFORD - Residents last week overwhelmingly approved an ordinance that protects local farmers from having their farming operations deemed a nuisance because of odors, noise, dust and other farming by-products.

The action came at a Monday, November 9, town meeting attended by about 40 residents.

Proposed Zoning Amendment
Would Regulate Package Stores

SOUTHBURY - The Zoning Commission opened a public hearing Thursday, November 12, on a petition to amend the zoning regulations by adding a category that would regulate package stores and the sale of alcoholic beverages.

The language proposed would be embedded in two line additions to the new category.

MONROE - American Legion posts from Monroe and Easton commemorated Veterans Day, Tuesday, November 11, on the Stepney Green.

Participants included decorated veterans, members of the Women's Auxiliary and four members of the Canadian Air Force.
