The Mississippi legislature has finally passed a long overdue cigarette tax increase, and they are to be applauded. We trust that Gov. Haley Barbour will sign the bill and we can move on. Another matter that needs to be addressed by the legislature is a $90 million hospital tax to help fund Medicaid. We urge state lawmakers to act on this immediately and send this needed legislation to the governor.

Lets just put an extra tax on everything. I propose that we tax speech. Lets say a nickel a coversation. That could help medicare. Or why not tax water? Oooh, I've go it. Lets put a tax on children and call it a child tax. We can give that money to the education fund. How about a tax on pigs to help fight the swine flu? Give me a break people. The liberal taxation of every darn thing is not the answer. Lets try some fiscal responsibility, hard work and stricter requirements on welfare. Lets deny welfare to those who are mentally and physically fit to work. That would save a ton of money. Cigarette taxes are an idea bordering on socialism. But, it seems, that we are doomed to that fate.

You have to be kidding me. Tax cigarettes, actually tax cigarette buyers. Has anyone looked around out our community? Drive by McDonalds any time of day. Any of the so call fast food venues in town. Parking lots are full. Now take just a few more minutes and look at a large percent of the people eating in these places. Point being, over eating and poor diet is a much larger health problem than cigerattes will ever be. One of those 18 wheelers that deliver to any where you buy goods is worse on air quality than a whole house full of people enjoying a cigarette. Please this is only one more way to raise taxes to pay for health care and More Cheesburgers are at fault for heart disease than a SMOKE...Read any article you chose. Obiesity is a huge problem, much bigger than my RIGHT to have a smoke in my own home.
