Bulldogs head to sub state after wins over Woodward Academy and Gilbert

The Bulldog baseball team won the district with wins over Woodward Academy, 10-0, and Gilbert, 4-2 and advanced to sub-state action at Dowling High School in West Des Moines Tuesday where they faced Prairie City-Monroe. Ogden 10 - Woodward 0 The Bulldogs raced to a 10-0 win over the Knights from Woodward Academy Tuesday, July 10 in Ogden. Coach Dick Smith said they needed to jump on a team like this early and that's what they did. Ogden erupted for 5 first inning runs and never looked back. The Bulldogs benefitted from a combined pitching effort by Josh Turner and Preston Church. Turner pitched four innings, not allowing a hit, and struck out seven while walking three batters. Church, returning to the lineup, struck out the batters he faced in Ogden's side of the fifth. Cayce Good started the game off by reaching first on a fielding error. Cody Good's sacrifice bunt placed Cayce on second. Cayce scored when Turner tripled to left field. A double to centerfield by Adam Adreon scored Turner. Woodward Academy errors helped the Bulldogs as Ogden tapped on 3 more runs for a 5-0 lead. The Bulldogs added two more runs in the fourth highlighted by Turner's double. Ogden finished the scoring in the fifth when they combined four hits to score three runs. Colton Boggess got a big run-scoring double in the inning. Ogden was led by Turner with two hits including a double and a triple. Boggess and Adreon each added a double. "We came out to play," said Coach Smith. "You can't let a team like that stay close." Turner pitched 6 1/3 innings striking out 11 Tiger batters. Gilbert was limited to one hit in the Ogden win. Church led the Bulldog half of the second with a double down the right field line. Hagen's sacrifice bunt moved Church to third base. Boggess lined a single to center field scoring Church for a 1-0 Bulldog lead. In Ogden's half of the third Cayce Good led the inning off with a free pass. Cody Good advanced Cayce to second on a sacrifice bunt. Turner than flied out to center field. A wild pitch by Parker Christian with Adreon batting, advanced Cayce to third base. Adreon eventually walked, placing runners on second and third. An error by Drew Mullenbach allowed Church to reach first, scoring Cayce and advancing Adreon to second. Hagen reached first when Mack Boothe's errant throw got by the first baseman allowing Adreon to score. Ogden was up 3-0. The Tigers cut into the Bulldog lead their half of the sixth. Turner struck out Mullenbach and Walker Day but issued a free pass to Christian. Boothe was hit by Turner's pitch, placing runners on first and second. A.J. Rutter batting Turner's pitch bounced off leg of Boggess. Boggess then threw the ball wildly to third allowing Christian to score and it was 3-1 Bulldogs. Ogden added an insurance run in their half of the sixth. Wyatt Westberg led the inning off by singling on a line drive to center field. Michael Ryan laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Westberg to second. Cayce Good grounded out to second allowing Westberg to advance to third base. Cody Good reached base when Gilbert's shortstop misplayed the grounder allowing Westberg to score for a 4-1 Bulldog lead. The Tigers made it interesting in their half of the seventh. Turner struck out the lead-off batter but issued a free pass to Jordan Knock. Church relieved Turner and promptly issued free passes to Carlton Jones and Lane Peterson to load the bases. Church struck out Mullenbach but issued a free pass to Day allowing Knock to score and leaving the bases loaded. Christian struck, out ending the ball game leaving the bases loaded. Ogden was led by Turner's 6 1/3 innings of pitching striking out 11 batters allowing 3 walks and only one hit. Church added a double and 2/3 innings of relief pitching, recording the save.
