They have lived on Pumpkin Hill in New Milford for 51 of their 56 years of marriage. In 1997, a fire completely destroyed their home, but they rebuilt on the same property.
Norm was the Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Formed Plastics, Inc. in Long Island, NY. He traveled throughout the country on business and often enjoyed one of his favorite hobbies, playing golf. He often told people that he had been in every state except North Dakota and Alaska.
At home he was a regular player at the Lake Waramaug Country Club, where he served one term as president and many years as Golf Committee Chairman.
He and his wife Fran also traveled a great deal after they retired. They especially enjoyed sightseeing and visited over 30 countries, often by way of cruises to the Caribbean, Mediterranean, Orient, and North Sea areas.
Norm's other love was the theater. A familiar face to local theater-goers for over 40 years, he ultimately performed in 52 local theatrical productions. His first local show was "Three Penny Opera" at the Sherman Playhouse in 1962.
His final performance was with the Lake Waramaug Country Club Players in 2004 presenting a cabaret of Jerome Kern music.
In 2007, the LWCC Players honored him with a tribute and a review of many of his roles there. Norm was a popular leading man in musicals and known as a "quick study" until Alzheimer's disease disabled him.
He acted in shows with the Creative Arts of New Milford using both the stage at Canterbury School and at New Milford High School before the group had their own theater.
He also performed at the Southbury Playhouse and several times with the Brookfield Players. He was not only a cast member in many shows at the Sherman Playhouse but also a director of several productions there.
Norm is survived by his wife, Frances L. Terry, who is remembered by many as the principal of the John Pettibone School and later the Northville Elementary School until her retirement in 1986; by his three children: Richard C. Terry of Ridgefield, CT, Susan L. Chapin of Sandy Hook, CT, and Lisa A. Terry of New Milford, CT; his five grandchildren: Ryan Chapin, Michael Chapin, and Stephen Mayer, all of Sandy Hook, CT, Nicole Hayward of Union City, NJ, and Brian Hayward of New Milford, CT; by his sister, Lorraine Gilmore of Dunedin, FL, and by his beloved German Shepherd, Jake.
The family will have a private burial service at Center Cemetery in New Milford. There will be a memorial service at the First Congregational Church in New Milford on October 25 at 3 p.m., with a reception to follow in the Fellowship Room.
In lieu of flowers, tax deductible contributions may be made to The New Milford Dog Park and mailed to P.O. Box 86, New Milford, CT, 06776.
