Intersection construction not as grim as feared

The construction at the Highway 51 and Quality Lane intersection may not be as invasive for traffic flow as originally feared, according to City of Senatobia Public Works Superintendent Timothy Simpson.
Simpson said at an Aldermen meeting last week that, following a revision to the construction plans, the intersection may not close completely.
Traffic is not expected to stop along Highway 51, according to Simpson.
Simpson also said that Wilson Drive will remain open throughout the process and that the city may be able to leave a lane or two open on Quality Lane in front of Walgreens, but that he couldn't say for sure.
"(Quality Lane) would be the only closure if it is fully closed," Simpson said.
Garbage collection change
Simpson also said that the city will now be picking up garbage four days per week, rather than five days per week.
According to Simpson, trash will not be picked up on Fridays and those who currently have their trash picked up on Fridays, will now be serviced on Thursdays.
The decision comes as part of an effort to streamline the waste collection procedure, to save manpower and fuel by collecting waste in a more-efficient manner.
Scott Street and Robinson Street
The Scott Street overlay project is progressing on schedule, according to Simpson, but the Robinson Street overlay project may take another month, Simpson said.
Simpson said that the city may be able to temporarily open Robinson Street at some points in time during the construction by pouring limestone.
Simpson also reported that the new walkway at Sycamore Park is currently being constructed.
Other business:
* Director of the Senatobia-Tate County Animal Shelter Heidi Terrell said that the shelter completed its third year in operation at the end of March. Terrell also said that she had received great feedback on Friends of the Shelter Animals' Pasta for Pets fundraising event and said that the group raised more than $500 in donations, in addition to the profits from the food.
* Senatobia Fire Department Chief Gary Copeland said that his department responded to 104 calls in the month of March.
* Code enforcement officer Joe Engel reported issuing 14 permits for $4,300. The permits represent a total estimated construction value of $594,100 and include four new residential home in the White Oaks subdivision.
* Steve Holts of the Senatobia Police Department said that his department would be increasing patrols in response to the recent shootings in Panola County.
* The board unanimously approved claims for the month of April in the amount of $1,877,755. Frazier made the motion and Nail seconded the motion.
* The board unanimously accepted the resignation of police officer Mike Jones effective March 31. Michael Cathey made the motion and Mike Putt seconded the motion.
* The board unanimously approved the purchase of a Lazer X Series Kawasaki Ultra Cut lawn mower from Western Auto at the state contract price of $9,162 for the Parks and Recreation Department.
* The board unanimously approved the renewal of the Senatobia Fire Department's insurance policy. Frazier made the motion and Nail seconded the motion.
All board members were present at the meeting.
The board entered into executive session to discuss personnel matters. No actions were taken during executive session according to Mayor Alan Callicott. This is the second known executive session since January 1.
