Country Crossing opening approaches
It has been a 24-hours-a day, seven-days-a week project for almost six months, but with less than 15 days before Country Crossing opens its doors, workers are stepping up their game. “We will be ready to open Dec. 1 despite 100 inches of rain and 37 days lost to rain,” said Mark Sheldon, vice president of construction. More than 800 construction workers were on the site of Country Crossings Friday alone. During the six-months of construction, crews of more than 300 have worked through the night in an effort to not lose a second of construction time as the grand opening date approaches.

Governor insists electronic bingo illegal
in Alabama

With less than 15 days before Country Crossing opens the doors to its bingo hall, controversy over the legality of electronic bingo continues to brew throughout the state.
Gov. Bob Riley Monday released letters sent from his office to gaming commissions in several states warning them of the illegality of electronic bingo in Alabama.
The letters cite a ruling by the Alabama Supreme Court against White Hall Resort and Entertainment Center where the court overruled an injunction halting the Governor’s Task Force on Illegal Gambling from seizing the center’s electronic bingo machines.

Enterprise-Ozark Community College gets new name
The much pursued goal of separating Enterprise-Ozark Community College and the Ozark Aviation College has hit yet another brick wall.

Honoring service, sacrifice
City celebrates Veterans Day

As lights shined on a list of Enterprise men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country and the American flag rippled in the wind, more than 100 heads bowed to remember America’s veterans and their selfless service to our nation.
“This is our moment to honor veterans who have made the ultimate sacrifice,” said Bill Baker, 2nd District commander for the Alabama Disable American Veterans.
Baker, area dignitaries and residents joined together at the Enterprise Wall of Freedom Nov. 11 to honor not only the nations’ veterans, but also the men and women who serve in the military today.

Supreme Court to decide Magwood appeal
The United States Supreme Court Monday agreed to hear an appeal by the man convicted of murdering a Coffee County Sheriff more than 30 years ago.
The court will decide whether or not the death sentence for Billy Joe Magwood, convicted of the 1979 murder of Sheriff Neil Grantham, should be overturned.
His death sentence was reinstated by the United States Court of Appeals in January, overturning an April 2007 ruling by U.S. District Judge Myron Thompson to vacate Magwood’s sentence.
The date of Magwood’s Supreme Court hearing has not been set at this time.

City’s lodging fee to increase
Tourism rivals agriculture as the top revenue generator in Alabama and the Enterprise Chamber of Commerce is hoping to attract some of that money locally.
The Chamber Tourism Committee Nov. 3 asked the Enterprise council for the implementation of a 4-percent lodging fee increase to the city’s current 2-percent fee — an increase the committee argued would be of no cost to local residents.
Council members are expected to approve the increase, which has been under development for more than four years by the tourism committee, during its Nov. 17 meeting.

Sheriff’s department adds horses to fleet
Residents will want to be on the lookout for local law enforcement during the holidays, or for a better choice of words, look up at local law enforcement, as they will be mounted atop 22 horses from around the county. The horses are enlisted for use by three Coffee County Sheriff’s Department reserve officers and 17 volunteers.
All are a part of the new “Sheriff’s Posse.”
“These people have donated their time, money, and animals towards this cause,” said reserve officer Scott Speigner.

Retired chaplain continues
to wear many hats

Retired Col. Chaplain Alvin M. “Sonny” Moore, III served around the world as an active-duty chaplain for the U.S. Army for over 26 years before settling in the Wiregrass area.
Moore started his career when he joined the Mississippi National Guard in 1963, when he was just 17, but he didn’t get in right away.
