New high school fund gets $113,500 boost
Before the start of Friday’s final Enterprise High School football game in Bates Memorial Stadium, school leaders and generous community members looked toward the future after making a combined $113,500 donation through the Bo Harrell and Jimmy Bowden Foundations for the new school’s construction.
“It’s humbling to get a donation of that size,” said Enterprise High School Principal Rick Rainer. “It’s one lump sum to aid in an area that we really still need funds to finish the project.”

Bingo controversy continues between Gilley, Riley
With less than 30 days before the doors of Country Crossing are expected to open in Houston County, developers of the country music theme park continue to face state officials who say electronic bingo in the state is illegal.
Despite the hurdles, however, developers say the park will open on schedule and will open with electronic bingo.
During an Oct. 30 press conference, Country Crossing developers joined forces with Houston County officials to address what has been described as a “witch hunt” to shut down the development.

Community enjoys fall concert
Enterprise-Ozark Community College presented their Fall “Kookie” Concert Oct. 27, at the L.B. Wallace Student Center featuring the EOCC Entertainers and the Expressions from the combined performance group of students from both Dauphin and Enterprise Junior High. Both groups performed a variety of musical numbers dressed in Halloween costumes. The Entertainers are under the direction of Ken Thomas and the Expressions are under the direction of Eric Mancil. Members of the EOCC Entertainers sing “I’ve got the Music in Me.”  MORE

New Brockton Town Council approves budget in split vote
In a split vote, the New Brockton town council approved a revised $1.7 million budget during its Oct. 2 meeting.
Council members Jack Young and Doug Pittman cast the opposing votes.
The previously proposed budget from Mayor Lenwood Herron was reduced by $31,000 after councilmember Jeff White requested that the “in-kind labor” fund of $75,000 be removed. The other $44,000 was dispersed into other accounts, with the majority going into intergovernmental funds, or expected grant monies.

Enterprise mayor stresses importance of upcoming census
During the 2000 census, an estimated 64 percent of Enterprise residents participated, but officials are working to up the ante in 2010.
“We are proud of citizens for participating, but we need their help once again, said Enterprise Mayor Kenneth Boswell.
More than $300 billion in federal funding is available annually for municipalities. Distribution of the funding, however, is determined by population information obtained by the census.
“Our census numbers determine how much federal funding we receive,” Boswell said.

Inquiry finds soldiers in Samson illegal
Fort Rucker officials acted outside of their authority when providing soldiers to assist law enforcement in the aftermath of a mass murder in Samson, according to a Department of the Army investigation.
Area officials, however, continue to offer their appreciation to the military post for the support it provides surrounding communities.

State awards city schools $6 million
Enterprise City Schools will soon have a financial boost after it receives a $6 million allocation from the Alabama Department of Education.
The allocation comes from $236 million of interest-free Qualified School Construction Bonds program that was created in the wake of the federal stimulus law passed by Congress earlier this year.
School systems in need of extra financing for repairs, renovations and construction are eligible for the interest-free bonds.

Fire Hydrant Testing Begins
The city of Enterprise Fire Department will begin its annual fire hydrant flow testing on Monday, Nov. 2. Testing will start inside the circle and then move outward. Residents should understand that the city is not wasting water, but that this testing is vital to the maintenance and upkeep of the city fire department, and helps ensure citizens safety in the event of an emergency. Testing should take two to three months.  MORE

Industrial site advantageous for city
The recent designation of industrial property in Enterprise as an AdvantageSite is another tool area recruiters hope to use to make Enterprise an industrial powerhouse in Alabama.
Phase II of the Yancey Parker Industrial Park was recently named one of 12 Alabama industrial parks advantageSites by Amazing Alabama, an economic development service of Alabama Power.
The designation signifies to industries looking to relocate that the area has completed a vetting process and can meet the needs of future industries.

‘Final flight’
‘The Breakfast Club,’ community loses another veteran

He flew three presidents. He flew Democrats and Republicans. Robert (Bob) Klingenbeck, 84, flew for his country and last Thursday he took a final flight home after passing away at Medical Center Enterprise. Area veterans, friends and family members attended his funeral mass Oct. 24 at St. John Catholic Church in Enterprise. Following the service, he was laid to rest at Meadowlawn Cemetery.

Novosel bust dedicated during Oct. 20 ceremony
Friends and admirers of the late Chief Warrant Officer Michael J. Novosel Sr. gathered Oct. 20, for the unveiling of Novosel’s bust at Fort Rucker’s Headquarters building.
Fort Rucker’s commander Maj. Gen. James O. Barclay III opened the ceremony by saying Novosel practiced the Warrior Ethos well before it was put down on paper.
“He is part of our tradition and part of our history,” Barclay said. “He set the stage for what an Army aviator is all about.”

Second arrest made in Level Plains murder
The second man believed to have participated in the shooting death of a Level Plains man is now in custody thanks to an anonymous tip.
Everett Rico Newson, 24, is in custody at the Dale County Jail after more than a week on the lam.
Investigators had been searching for Newson after receiving information he was involved in the Oct. 18 murder of Marcus Blackmon, 43.
Dale County Sheriff’s Department investigators received a tip Monday that Newson could be found in Abbeville, said Sheriff Wally Olson.

Downtown construction begins
The city of Enterprise began its Downtown Revitalization Project on Monday.
This grant-funded project will provide new sidewalks with brick pavers, improved lighting and hanging planter baskets. The project includes areas one block north and south of the Boll Weevil Monument on Main Street.
The project is projected to be completed in 90 working days or by March 11, 2010. Businesses will remain open during the course of construction, and residents are encouraged to continue to visit the establishments.

Commissioners welcome young leaders
Coffee County Commissioners welcomed some of the area’s future leaders during the Oct. 26 commission meeting.
Twenty-seven students from different schools in the county attended the meeting as part of the Youth Leadership Program.
The purpose of the program is to prepare high school students who have demonstrated leadership potential to take active leadership roles in improving their homes, schools and communities.
The program brings selected students from Enterprise High School, Elba High School, New Brockton High School, Kinston School and Zion Chapel School together for several learning sessions.
