Soldier faces multiple charges
A Fort Rucker soldier remains on suicide watch after being charged in connection with 36 counts of possession of child pornography. Sgt. Dustin Ray Hogan, 30, remains in the Coffee County Jail without bond after he was found in possession of numerous home videos and pictures depicting him engaging in sexual activity with two young girls who authorities say are related to Hogan.

Electronic bingo battle continues
Employees of both Country Crossing and VictoryLand are out of work as the battle rages on over the legality of electronic bingo in Alabama. As the several hundred employees worried about when they would return to work Monday, the legal battles between bingo hall operators and state officials kicked into overdrive. U.S. District Judge Myron Thompson Monday refused to issue a temporary restraining order against Gov. Bob Riley’s Task Force on Illegal Gambling that would prevent officers from raiding Country Crossing.

Enterprise School board approves calendar changes
Enterprise students can look forward to a little extra summertime after last week’s school board decision to push back the school start-date for the 2010 school year.
Members of the Enterprise City School board unanimously agreed to delay the first day of school during the Jan. 26 meeting.
Enterprise City Schools Superintendent Dr. Jim Reese said the school year will start more than a week later than usual in order to make sure the high school, currently under construction, is complete and furnished.

Fort Rucker units receive awards
A Fort Rucker unit and one soldier were honored during the annual Army Aviation Association of America (AAAA) awards presentation banquet Jan. 28.
The Air Traffic Control Company of the Year Award was given to Fort Rucker’s 1-58th Airfield Operations Battalion.
The award is presented in recognition of the tactical air traffic control unit, which was said to have achieved significant goals in accomplishing the tactical mission.

Aviation units honored
The best aviation battalions in the U.S. Army were recognized Jan. 28 at the Lt. Gen. Ret. Ellis D. Parker Outstanding Unit Awards Luncheon.
The luncheon was held during the recent Aviation Senior Leaders’ Conference on Fort Rucker.
The Parker Award, named for the former director of the Army Staff, has four categories, and honors excellence in leadership, training, maintenance and safety.
The Overall Winner and Best Combat Battalion was the 7th Squadron, 17th Calvary Regiment based at Fort Campbell, Ky.

Roads concern residents
The New Brockton Town Council continued to discuss deteriorating roadways at the Feb. 1 meeting.
Specific concern was placed on the damage on Byrd Mill Road, which according to residents is nearly impassable.
After the heavy rainfall in December, Alabama Gov. Bob Riley declared several counties in the Wiregrass, including Coffee County, as a disaster area.
The declaration provides assistance from the federal emergency management agency to repair damages.

Mayor reports on ‘State of City’
Adequate funding and planning are necessities in order for a city to grow, prosper and build its infrastructure. Enterprise Mayor Kenneth Boswell told Rotarians Jan. 26 that city officials implemented both to ensure Enterprise continues as the City of Progress.
Throughout his administration, Boswell said he has placed an emphasis on planning for the future. Even though the nation has faced economic hardships, proper planning has allowed the city’s various departments to continue to grow and plan for the future.

To raid or not to raid, that is the question
The doors of Country Crossing remain chained and locked following the second attempted raid on the facility in under a month.
Alabama state troopers were on the grounds of the Houston County development for about eight hours Friday morning awaiting the go ahead to seize controversial electronic bingo machines from the business before they were ordered to leave the premises.
They later staged at an Alabama rest area on Highway 231 South.

Town residents seek road repairs
After heavy rains washed out many roadways last month, residents along Byrd Mill Road in New Brockton are still dealing with problems.
New Brockton resident Chuck Schieffer, who resides on Byrd Mill Road, said the road has gone without grading for a longer period of time than ever before.
“The only work being done on that road is by myself and two other neighbors on the road,” said Schieffer.

EHS cadets enjoy military ball
It was a night of fun and dancing for the more than 200 attendees of the 43rd Annual Enterprise High School JROTC Military Ball on Jan. 22 at Fort Rucker’s Aviators’ Landing.
The night was highlighted by the recognition of the senior cadets who have worked hard throughout their high school careers while serving in the EHS JROTC program.
The evening began with photos, followed by a formal receiving line where instructors, the guest speaker Ret. Lt. Gen. Daniel Petrosky and EHS principal Rick Rainer welcomed students.

Superintendent wants ‘real’ budget from state in 2010
While Coffee County Schools superintendent Dr. Linda Ingram is looking forward to the coming year, she is also concerned about the financial status of education statewide.
“We want a ‘real’ budget,” said Ingram, expressing her concern over the economic outlook for the 2011 school year.
Because of the lack of state funding, many schools have been forced to borrow from banks in order to keep operating. Proration has had a profound effect on school systems statewide by creating inaccurate budgets for the operational expenses.
