New meth craze on the rise
Though the use of lithium strips has long been used in the manufacturing of methamphetamine across the nation, Coffee County Sheriff’s Department officials say it is increasing in popularity in the county.
In recent drug raids by the Coffee County Sheriff’s Department and Enterprise Police Department, officers have found manufacturers using lithium strips from batteries to speed the production of methamphetamine in a sort of one-step process. The lithium, when placed in a bottle with pseudoephedrine, ammonia-nitrate and/or other chemicals, makes a fiery and gaseous reaction that quickly makes methamphetamine.

County schools receive facility upgrades
Administrators at New Brockton High School say the new school year is moving along smoothly and efficiently due to the newly renovated office area.
The office was renovated during the summer and now has a new reception area, conference room, nurse’s station, principal and vice principal offices.
Coffee County Superintendent Dr. Linda Ingram said similar renovations were made at Zion Chapel and Kinston schools and were paid for with local funds.
Ingram said more than $10 million worth of capital projects have been completed in the Coffee County School System, including the recent addition of eight classrooms and a new band room at Zion Chapel.

Wildcats, fans explore new facilities
One of the biggest football games in Enterprise High School’s history kicked off at 7 Friday night but that didn’t stop the Wildcat fans from showing up as early as 3 p.m.
Crowds began swarming the campus for Enterprise’s season opener — and first game in its new stadium.
As it got closer to kickoff, the excitement in the air increased as Wildcat fans fought for inaugural game T-shirts, fans, blue and white shakers and program books.

‘A bird’s-eye view’
Young Eagles to take flight

(Editor’s Note: This is the first part of a series of articles that will feature the Sept. 25 second annual Enterprise Aviation Expo.)
Large crowds from near and far are expected to flock to Enterprise Sept. 25 for the second annual Enterprise Air Expo that promises a day of fun for the entire family.
Activities throughout the day will include fly-ins from war birds, a static display of historic military vehicles and a showcase of various planes that are hangared at the Enterprise Airport.

County jail, deputies cleared in lawsuit
The Coffee County Sheriff’s Department and deputies were recently exonerated in connection with allegations of using excessive force during a jail riot more than three years ago.
Federal Judge Mark Fuller ruled the use of a taser and a beanbag shotgun round to subdue inmate Timothy Council March 3, 2007, was not excessive force and not a violation of Council’s civil rights as he alleged in a lawsuit.

City bans human waste fertilizer
A moratorium was placed Aug. 17 on the use of treated human waste as a fertilizer within the city limits.
Concerns about the particular form of fertilizer were raised by the residents of Coone, Baxter, Walker and Harper streets in Enterprise following a proposition by Beckham Septic Tanks and Ditching Service to develop to treat human waste and use such fertilizer on property adjacent to their homes.

Fort Rucker welcomes new general
The 98th Army Band played “Sweet Home Alabama” last Thursday marking Maj. Gen. James O. Barclay’s farewell to Fort Rucker and time as commander of the United States Army Aviation Center of Excellence.
“As an Alabama native, you opened your arms to Debbie and I, but it was coming home,” said Barclay. ”We will miss being with you and being able to celebrate with you and share time with you.”

Wreck claims life of Enterprise man
Alabama State Troopers have released the name of an Enterprise man killed in an Aug. 18 accident on Boll Weevil Circle that left two others injured.
LaDon Brannon, 27, was killed when his 1996 Geo Prizm collided with a 2008 Ford Fusion driven by Kimberly Hutcheson, 26, of Andalusia, according to a press release from the Alabama Department of Public Safety.
Coffee County Coroner Robert Preachers pronounced Brannon dead at the scene.

‘It’s been a long time coming’
Principal welcomes students to new school

“Welcome to Enterprise High School,” are words Enterprise High School principal Rick Rainer has been waiting more than three years to say.
Thunderous applause came from the more than 1,500 students gathered in the EHS auditorium. For sophomores, it was the first time hearing the words. Juniors and seniors had heard them before, but not inside the newly constructed Enterprise High School.

First day back emotional for teachers
It was an emotional first day back to school for Enterprise teachers Aug. 18, as the entire school system gathered at Enterprise High School for the annual teacher institute day. The event, hosted inside the new gymnasium, brought tears of joy, laughter and some painful memories as the teachers toured the campus. With a standing ovation, the teachers welcomed the high school teachers who entered the gym wearing T-shirts with “A New Beginning: August 18, 2010” written on the back.

Traffic light signals opening of high school
After almost a month of work, the traffic signal at the entrance of Enterprise High School and the intersection of Main and Alberta streets became fully functional about an hour before school began.
The signal began flashing yellow Aug. 18 at noon, spending several days at caution before becoming fully functional Aug. 23.
“We want to urge motorists to approach the area with caution,” said Enterprise Mayor Kenneth Boswell.

Troy Cablevision to bring new technology
Coffee, Crenshaw, Dale and Pike counties will be entering the 21st century with broadband internet that will connect educational institutions, emergency workers and create jobs thanks to Troy Cablevision.
The company, with the receipt of a $26 million grant, will deploy a fiber-optic network to provide a critical new broadband route between the counties, according to a press release from the office of U.S. Congressman Bobby Bright.
