Running with a purpose EHS cross country team confident, fast at state meet
Traveling up Interstate 65 North had a different feel this season for the Enterprise High School girls cross country team.
Last season the girls made the same trip to the Alabama High School Athletic Association state meet in Moulton and were happy to be there. This year, the girls ran with a purpose.
“They were less intimidated this time,” Enterprise coach Connie Thompson said. “They have gained confidence as well as speed (since last year).”

Melissa White wanted to see how the Enterprise High School girls basketball team measured up to elite competition. After last weekend, White isn’t disappointed.
The Lady Cats earned third place in the Saint James Basketball Tip Off Tournament last Friday and Saturday at Saint James School in Montgomery. Enterprise defeated Jeff Davis and Saint James during the event.

For the second consecutive season, fans in Enterprise can feast on basketball before feasting on Thanksgiving dinner.
The Enterprise basketball program will host the second Enterprise Tip Off Tournament next week. Games begin Nov. 23 and last through Nov. 25.
“It’s good to have a good tournament before Thanksgiving, before people start leaving for the holiday,” Enterprise boys basketball coach Albert Weeden said. “You get a chance to see what you have.”

Hoops health warning needed
So for a while I was a fan of Midnight Madness.
College basketball teams aren’t allowed to practice until a certain date. Rules never said practice must be held after a certain time on that date so some schools took advantage and hit the court just after midnight.
ESPN, which sets the standard for the sports world, cashed in on this concept and created Midnight Madness. Dick Vitale and other boisterous commentators would attend these midnight practices around the country. College students would flood the gym. College basketball fans would tune in.
Teams even made practices more fan friendly.

EOCC Boll Weevils earn win in new gymnasium
There aren’t many of them, but the 10 members of the Enterprise-Ozark Community College Boll Weevils men’s basketball team can run and can move constantly.
“It doesn’t take long for our guys to get up and down the court,” first-year EOCC men’s coach Wesley Person said. “And we’ve got some guys who can shoot the basketball.”
That was obvious Sunday afternoon as the Weevils downed the visiting Huntingdon jayvees, 104-54.

Eagles play tough early, falter late in losses
Coppinville’s game Monday against Daleville didn’t go exactly like the others, but it was pretty close.
The Eagles played Daleville tough for a quarter, before losing 44-23, dropping Coppinville’s record to 1-8.
“These guys can play with anybody for at least a half,” Coppinville coach Wes Pouncey said. “The age difference is there and they give out (after that).”

Honeysuckle Middle School sweeps Enterprise Junior High
Enterprise Junior High basketball coach David Keel didn’t need to see the scoreboard to know the Wildcats were trailing Honeysuckle Monday night. He’d seen enough missed free throws.
Honeysuckle defeated Enterprise Junior 40-36 in overtime Monday. In the loss, the Wildcats missed 16 free throws.
“You can do that when you’re winning by 20,” Keel said, “but if you’re in a close game, you can’t do that.”

Dauphin’s defensive pressure wears down Coppinville Eagles
For a little more than a quarter, Coppinville was able to play through Dauphin’s pressure. For more than a half, though, the Fins’ defense was too much for Coppinville.
Dauphin defeated Coppinville 54-31 last Thursday.
Coppinville’s Demetrius Scott hit two free throws to take an early lead. The Eagles held that lead through most of the first quarter and led 12-11 after one.

EHS Tip Off Club back for another year
Chad Meeks remembers Enterprise residents supporting the golf team during a championship run in the late 1990s. He’s leading the charge to help current Enterprise High School basketball teams in the same way.
Meeks hosted the first EHS Tip Off Club meeting last Friday at Ryan’s. In its second year, the EHS Tip Off Club serves as a support group for all of the basketball teams at the high school. The club will meet at noon each Friday at Ryan’s. The Tip Off Club will not meet Nov. 27 or on Christmas or New Year’s Day.

New Brockton Gamecocks have new look for basketball season
The New Brockton boys basketball team will have a new look this season, both in the gym and on the sideline.
Kevin Hancock begins his tenure as the Gamecocks’ coach, taking over for Robby Kinsaul, who guided New Brockton to an 18-9 mark last season.
New Brockton opened its season Tuesday night with a game against Florala. When the Gamecocks host Wicksburg Thursday, they will play in a refurbished gym. New bleachers were installed. New wall pads were placed on each end of the court. The improvements add to a new paint job the gym received before last season.

GAME OVER Wetumpka ends Enterprise season
Enterprise coach Kevin Collins spent the last week searching for a game plan to use against Wetumpka in the first round of the state football playoffs last Friday. The Indians spent halftime making adjustments.
Those adjustments proved to be the difference in Wetumpka’s 20-17 win against Enterprise.
Down to its third-string quarterback, Enterprise focused on the running attack in the first half. The Wildcats moved the football and kept Wetumpka’s dual-threat quarterback Jamal Golden on the sideline.

Gamecocks fall short against defending champ
Jim Bob Striplin has wanted to see how New Brockton measures up to the state’s elite football teams since he began coaching the Gamecocks.
While the score was not what he hoped, Striplin was pleased with how New Brockton played in a 34-21 loss to three-time defending Class 2A champion Leroy last Friday in the opening round of the state playoffs.
“We went over there and fought those guys,” Striplin said. “We could have beaten them. They just had a few more Jimmys and Joes than we did and made a couple of plays we didn’t make. That was the difference.”

Travel can be good, bad
Let me get on my soapbox for a while.
I just re-examined the new classification and alignment released by the Alabama High School Athletic Association last week. I’m sure they’ve heard this before, but I think there is a better way to do it.
The only thing that changed for Enterprise in Class 6A, Region 3 is the number of teams. Russell County dropped to a 5A school, leaving just seven teams in Region 3.

Former coach visits EHS Quarterback Club
Former Enterprise assistant football coach Ben Baker spoke to the Enterprise Quarterback Club last Friday at Po Folks. Baker served as an assistant to Paul Terry from 1965 until 1969 and to Bill Bacon from 1974-1978. He now lives in Ozark. Bacon told stories of the good times he had while coaching at Enterprise, and mentioned there were as many other stories he couldn’t tell. A group of men who played for or coached with Baker posed for a picture shortly after the meeting. Pictured in front, from left, are Thad Morgan and Ben Baker. Standing, from left, are Charles Clark, Kevin Maddox, Bruce Averett, Joe Jackson and Jimmy Lee.

While the 2009 Enterprise football team left its legacy as the last Wildcat team to play in Bates Memorial Stadium, it had already left one perhaps even larger.

Enterprise cross country girls qualify for state meet
Katrina Bokenfohr runs for the love of it. Her twin sister Kristina runs because, well, her sister runs and she can’t stand to let her sister get the best of her.
“I don’t care what it is, we have to try to beat each other,” Katrina said. “We would rather beat each other than anyone else.”
The Bokenfohr sisters, freshmen at Dauphin Junior High School, ran in front during most of the cross country meets this season while running for Enterprise High School. Last Thursday both girls lead the team to a second place team finish at the Section II Cross Country Qualifying Meet in Auburn, qualifying Enterprise for the State Meet Saturday at Oakville Indian Mounds Park and Museum in Moulton.

One game does not a season make, and for new Enterprise-Ozark Community College coach Wesley Person, the fact the Boll Weevils came up on the short end of a 94-57 decision against Bevill State in Jasper last Monday night was not all that bothersome.
“We are experiencing growing pains,” Person said of the 2009-10 EOCC squad that features only five sophomores on its 13-man roster. “We’re mostly a freshman team but I think we’re going to be OK down the line.”
